Plinth beam protect the walls from crack in the case of settlement of foundation. When we don’t provide plinth beam during settlement, in the case of settlement of foundation, the walls become cracked so we provide the plinth beam to protect the wall from cracks right in the case of settlement of foundation. Let us understand the right way to construct a plinth beam:
Normally concrete of minimum M20 grade is used in the construction of a plinth beam.
The depth of the beam should be at least 200mm and the upper surface of the beam should be higher than that of the ground.
Before pouring concrete the position of the shuttering should be fixed firmly.
The steel rods should be giving a covering of 2mm and proper compacting of the concrete should be done.
Always remember that proper curing of the beam is also very important.
Purposes of the plinth beam:
Plinth beam prevents differential settlement in structures because all the load coming on the plinth beam is uniformly transferred to the foundation.
It prevents the dampness from foundation to enter the building.
These beams tie all the columns
These beams prevent cracks from foundation to reach the wall.
It prevents the building to collapse during an earthquake.
